Enlisted on August 28, 1861 at the age of 20 in the 5th Michigan Infantry, Company F as a private. In 1860 the census enumerates him (as Theodore Brus) living in the residence of Hamilton and Sabra Irish in West Bloomfield, MI. Theodore listed his residence at the time of enlistment as Southfield, MI. He survived the war and by 1880 he and his wife, Mary A. Brees, resided in Cedar Rapids, Iowa where he listed his occupation as a policeman. He applied for a Veteran’s Pension in 1877. Mary claimed her widow’s pension in 1892. Theodore is buried in Oak Hill Cemetery, Cedar Rapids, Linn County, Iowa under the name T.M. Brees.
