Otto A. Berger

5th MI Infantry, Company D
(c.1838 – 1926)
Otto A. Berger enlisted on June 19, 1861 at the age of 22 in the 5th MI Infantry, Company D.  He was promoted to Full Sergeant on August 15, 1862, promoted further to Full 2nd Lieutenant on Aug. 28, 1864, and finally promoted to Full 1st Lieutenant on May 8, 1865.  His unit saw hard fighting throughout the war and these were likely battlefield promotions.  He received a gunshot wound during his service but was mustered out with his regiment on July 5, 1865.

Probably born December 1838 (his birth years have been reported anywhere from 1830 to1840) in Winluseburg, Prussia (Germany), by 1850 Berger was living in Southfield Township, MI with his parents Fredrick and Rosenna Berger.

He married Rachel Van Every (1839-1907) from the Village of Franklin in Southfield Township, Oakland County, MI and their first two children, Wannie (b.1866) and Dom (b.1867), were living with their parents  in Bloomfield Township, MI in 1870.  The couple’s  later children include Charles (b.1868), Dora (b.1869), Cornelia (b1872), Florance (b.1876), Clarisa (b.1879), Arthur C. (b.1879), and Lillie I. (b.1881). By 1910 Otto was still living in the Village of Franklin, Southfield Township with his second wife, Mary P. (age 77).

Otto died in 1926 and is buried in Franklin  Cemetery, Franklin, MI with his wife Rachel.
