5th MI Infantry, Company D and 2nd Infantry, U.S. Veteran Reserve Corps

Michael Burns enlisted on July 8, 1861 as a private in Company D of the 5th MI Infantry at the age of 22. He was wounded and received a disability discharge from the 5th MI on December 4, 1862 at Falmouth, VA. Burns was drafted and re-enlisted in the 2nd Infantry, U.S. Veteran Reserve Corps on July 2, 1863. He was discharged from that unit on November 16, 1865 at Detroit, MI. He survived the war.
Michael Burns was born about 1839 in Ireland. At age 20 he was working as a laborer and living in George W. Green’s hotel in Franklin Village, Southfield Twp., MI. He listed Oakland County as his residence when he enlisted in 1861 and he was a resident of the county when he was drafted for service again in 1863.
