Company H at age 21 as a private. He listed his residence as Oakland County, MI on his enlistment papers. James was promoted on February 13, 1863 to Full Wagon-master (Brigade Wagon-master). He survived the war and was mustered out on July 5, 1865 in Jeffersonville, IN.
James is buried in the Franklin Cemetery, Franklin, MI under the name J M Smith.
