James Darling

5th MI Infantry, Company F

     This soldier is believed to refer to a young man born in 1835 and enumerated in the 1860 census as a farm laborer living in George Green’s hotel in Southfield.   He enlisted at Fort Wayne, MI on June 19, 1861 at the age of 26 in the 5th MI Infantry, Company F.  During the course of his service Darling was promoted to Full Sergeant and then to Full 2nd Lieutenant.  He was mustered out July 5, 1865 at Jeffersonville, IN.  His service record lists him as surviving both a wound and as a prisoner of war, however the Birmingham, MI Civil War Veterans’ Monument lists Darling as having died of disease.  No date of death, family, or burial information has been identified.
