William Henry Clemons

Born in February 1847 or 1848 in New York, William Henry Clemons joined the 161st NY Infantry, Company E as a private at age 16 in Jasper, NY. He enlisted Sept. 12, 1864 and was mustered out at Fort Jefferson, FL on Sept. 20, 1865.
He appears on the 1880 Census in Sterling, Macomb County, MI married to Phoebe with children William (b.1870), John R.(b.1873), Mary A. (b.1875), and Lilly (b.1879). In the 1890 Veteran’s Schedule William appears listed with a Farmington, MI post office. William and Phoebe had an additional son, James D., born in 1878 who is enumerated as living with William H., Phoebe, and John R in 1900 in Southfield Twp.
The 1908 Oakland County Land Atlas shows a small piece of property east of the Franklin Cemetery belonging to W.H. Clemons. Phoebe passed away in 1917 and William H. followed her between 1920 and 1930. It is likely that the couple is buried in the Franklin Cemetery, Franklin, MI near their son James D. William H. Clemons appears on the Franklin Village Cemetery Veterans’ Memorial listed as Henry Clemons.
